Nancy Fahey, a Hall of Fame coach who has won five national championships at Washington University in St. Louis, is retiring from coaching after five seasons in Illinois. Her announcement on Friday came a day after the Illini ended a 7-20 season with a loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten women’s tournament.
Fahey was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012. She coached at Washington University for 31 seasons and reached the Division III tournament 29 times, including 10 runs to the Final Four. She won four national titles from 1998 to 2001 and another in 2010.
After posting a 737-133 record in Washington, she was drafted into Illinois in 2017 but never had a successful season in Champaign. The Illini were 42-99 overall and 7-77 in Big Ten regular-season games, including 1-13 this season. (Staff and wire reports)
Bills’ Beasley seeks trade: The Buffalo Bills gave veteran receiver Cole Beasley permission to seek a trade, The Associated Press reported. Beasley, who turns 33 next month, has a year left on the four-year contract he signed when he joined free agency with Buffalo in 2019 after spending his first seven NFL seasons in Dallas.
The Bills are open to a return from Beasley if he can’t orchestrate a deal. Buffalo is already facing the loss of receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who has signed a one-year contract and has not yet decided whether he will retire after 12 NFL seasons.
Beasley remained productive last season as Buffalo’s slot receiver but became a distraction off the field for being one of the league’s most vocal anti-vaccination opponents last summer. (AP)
Murray and Lendl reunited: Andy Murray brings back Ivan Lendl as his coach and reunites about 4½ years after the couple’s second split. Their partnership brought Murray, the only tennis player to have more than one singles title at the Summer Games, three Grand Slam singles trophies and two consecutive Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016.
The men are now planning to hold a multi-week training block in the United States after the Miami Open hard-court tournament, which ends on April 3. As the tennis tour heads to Europe for the clay circus culminating with the French Open from May 22 through June 5, Murray is gearing up for the grass season. Wimbledon starts on June 27th.
